Get To The Source

Once you get clear about the source of a challenge, problem or need, you can take effective action to consciously create change.

Here are two techniques that access your inner wisdom and can assist you in getting to the source. When you know what is really important to you, you have clarity. And when you have clarity, your actions have focus. They will also help you reframe any situation or challenge.

Technique #1
The Five Whys

Try this simple technique to get to the source of what you want.

I want to quit my job.
Why do you want to quit your job?
Because I want to stop being told what to do.
Why do I want to stop being told what to do?
Because I could get my job done in peace.
Why do I want to job done in peace?
Because I would feel like I'm accomplishing something in my day.

Keep asking yourself "why" until you get to your core value.

In the above example, this person needs to feel like s/he is completing projects. When one crosses items off of a "to do" list there is a sense of accomplishment. In this example, this person doesn't really want a new job; this person needs to feel like they have forward momentum in their day. So, the next step is to find ways of making this happen in their current position. A new job may still be option, but with this exercise this person has a new understanding of the situation.

Technique #2
"In what ways might I?"

Brainstorm a list of challenges that begin with the sentence structure of:

In what ways might I _____________?

For example:

In what ways might I feel like I'm accomplishing something every day?
In what ways might I make more money?
In what ways might I borrow money?
In what ways might I get a better paying job?
In what ways might I meet my life partner?
In what ways might I date more?

Take any situation and reframe it by using the above sentence structure. Take each challenge you are experiencing and ask yourself: "In what ways might I?"

AND THEN LISTEN FOR THE ANSWERS YOUR INNER WISDOM GIVES YOU. Write out the answers that surface. Do not censor yourself.

This exercise helps shift you into seeing what is possible, what options really are available and what actions you can take to you to create what you want.
