Are You An Effective Communicator?
Making small adjustments to how you communicate and listen will increase your communication effectiveness. Ask yourself these questions to find out how effective you are as a communicator.
- Do you make eye contact?
- Do you watch the person's body posture and facial expressions?
- Do you empathize and try to understand feelings, thoughts and actions?
- Do you keep from interrupting and let the person finish, even though you already know what the person means?
- Do you ask questions to clarify information?
- Do you smile and nod your head to show interest?
- How do you listen, when you don't like the person who is talking or what someone is saying?
- Do you ignore outside distractions?
- Do you listen for and remember important points?
- Do you keep from judging what was said - do you remain neutral?
Take any of these questions and create an action step. For example, spend a week focusing on ignoring outside distractions when you speak or listen and see what kinds of results you'll generate.
The next week try asking questions of interest in every conversation you have. Notice how much better you'll feel after a conversation. You'll also feel like you've had an authentic connection with the other person. You might even learn something new!
